Construction on the Almond Street Project is moving into its next phase.

Almond Street serves as a critical public safety evacuation route. These improvements will help ensure residents, first responders, and emergency services can move safely and efficiently during emergencies, including wildfires and other critical incidents.

Upcoming Schedule:

Survey work begins: Monday, April 13, crews will begin survey work, and residents may notice equipment deliveries and increased activity in the area.
Construction & demolition start: Friday, April 24
Estimated completion: Fall 2026

What to Expect

As construction progresses, residents should expect ongoing construction activity, including noise and temporary inconveniences. Access to properties may be impacted at times, and advance notice will be provided when disruptions are anticipated.

Project design continues to move forward. Construction is currently anticipated to begin in early 2026 and conclude in summer 2026. During construction, access to properties from Almond Street may be temporarily restricted at times.

We understand residents are eager for more detailed information. A more comprehensive update is expected in February and will include construction phasing, access considerations, and anticipated impacts. As details are finalized, updates will be posted on this project website.

The City is exploring a potential Almond Street Project to address traffic circulation and create a secondary emergency evacuation route in the northwest area. This project could connect Almond Street between Carnelian Street and Via Verde Street.

FAQs

This project is necessary to provide an additional emergency services route to and from the northwestern portion of the City, which is currently has only one access point. The only entry and exit for this neighborhood is via Sapphire Street, meaning that during emergencies, both the public and emergency responders rely on the same route, creating potential safety challenges during evacuations. Additionally, if a new connection is created, this could result in improved emergency response times for neighborhoods north of Almond Street.

The need for a connection along Almond Street was formally identified in the City's very first General Plan in 1981 and has continued to be identified in all subsequent General Plans.

The right-of-way necessary for the potential Almond Street extension was dedicated in 1977 and is 66 feet wide. At this time staff is continuing to determine the exact property line locations of this right-of-way dedication and will have more details about potential modifications that may occur at our next community meeting.

No, the purpose of this project is to address the circulation issue related to public safety access and resident evacuation routes. Community members attended the regularly scheduled City Council Meeting on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at 7:00 p.m. in the Council Chambers at the Civic Center (10500 Civic Center Drive). During the meeting, staff presented the preliminary design concept, shared the purpose of the project, and highlighted key design features and community engagement efforts. Staff also recommended that the City Council authorize the selection of an engineering design consultant to continue moving the project forward. There was an opportunity for residents to speak about the project and share their thoughts with City Council.

About the Concept:

The preliminary design concept reflects many of the priorities shared by community members during the April 23 open house, including:

A pedestrian and equestrian trail along the south side of Almond Street
No on-street parking
Low-level street lighting to support safety and deter crime
Native landscaping and a rural aesthetic along the north side of Almond Street

April 2025 Workshop Information

Almond Street Community Workshop 2

Our community workshop was held on Wednesday, April 23 from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at Fire Station #177 (9270 Rancho Street, Rancho Cucamonga).

From this session we revisited the key questions and feedback shared during our initial community meeting and continued discussing the evacuation route in the northwest area.

The workshop was organized into two parts: from 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. community members engaged in an open house format, visiting various department stations. From 7:00 p.m. - 7:30 p.m. attendees participated in a hands-on tabletop design activity to collaboratively explore ideas.
