Using Art as Tool for Selfcare

Healthy RC wrapped up the December Selfcare series with a free virtual Paint Night activity led by two amazing facilitators, Teresa Jansen, and Jaymie Leslie. We had many attendees participate in the Zoom virtual meeting – many of whom had families join in on the fun. Teresa Jansen, an LMFT trainee with the Trauma and Healing Foundation led a breath-work guided meditation that helped center everyone and prepare them to be mindful and present.  Jaymie Leslie, artist and member of our Rancho Cucamonga Public Art Committee, guided participants through a thoughtful painting activity that started with showing how colors can be a vessel for expressing your emotions. Students then had sometime to reflect on their day and their emotions and begin to paint what’s on their minds. Youth and adults shared their work in break out groups and had time to reflect on discuss these emotions with the community in a safe space.

Some take-aways residents shared were, “That taking care of your self is not being selfish, on the contrary, is an act of love and self respect. You can not help others if you don't care of your self.”

Other shared, “Thank you so much for offering this incredible opportunity. My family and I have really appreciated participating.💗”

The Mental Health Subcommittee are excited to start planning our next selfcare series that will be focused on caregiver support in early February.
