Businesses and Residents Learn to be QuakeSmart

There’s going to be a whole lot of shaking going on at the Victoria Gardens Cultural Center on Friday, June 17, 2016.  A free QuakeSmart Business Preparedness Workshop will take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and later that evening the Fire District will join the Library and City of RC’s Planning Department in hosting a Local History Night event from 7 – 9 p.m. that is themed “Remember the past…prepare for the future,” focusing on emergency preparedness.

QuakeSmart Earthquake Preparedness Workshop helps prepare businesses.  25% of small- to medium-sized businesses do not reopen after a disaster, according to Hewlett Packard.   They also assert that most businesses won’t survive if not operating normally within 10 days.  The Rancho Cucamonga Fire District recognizes that local businesses are essential to our community and its economic vitality, therefore offering a variety of programs and support for the business community.  This free workshop is yet one more tool that will teach business owners and managers how to perform comprehensive earthquake assessments as well as provide engineering and retrofit information designed to keep businesses open following a major tremor.   The QuakeSmart Earthquake Preparedness Workshop is sponsored by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES), Federal Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH), and Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The community is invited to Local History Night!  Disasters, such as floods, wildfires and windstorms, have shaped our community.  This year’s local history event (7 – 9 p.m.) takes on an emergency preparedness theme with “Remember the past…prepare for the future.”  In addition to the historic preservation organizations that offer a look back at Rancho Cucamonga’s heritage, this event features exhibitors such as the National Weather Service and Honeyville Grain who will provide emergency preparedness supply tips and information.  Ever wonder what an 8.0 magnitude quake feels like?  Check out the Quake Cottage for a lifelike glimpse of a significant quake.  A live band (The Silverados), vehicle displays and kid’s activities will make this learning experience even more fun.  Come on out and join the fun while learning how to prepare your family to be ReadyRC!
