The City of Rancho Cucamonga is implementing green bike lanes through grant funding by the Mobile Source Air Pollution Reduction Review Committee (MSRC) to help promote biking as a transportation method and enhance safety for bicyclists and motorists. Green bike lane facility benefits include:
Green bike lanes provide reinforcement that bicyclists have priority and will be implemented in areas of interaction between vehicles and bicycles, such as approaching intersections, commercial driveways and right turn pockets. As shown below, potential conflict areas approaching an intersection will have green thermoplastic to alert drivers that bicyclists may be present and to alert bicyclists of vehicles encroaching into the bike facility.
This bike facility treatment allows for bicyclists to feel safer when approaching an intersection where weaving typically occurs. According to the Federal Highway Administration, research of green bike facilities has denoted positive effects for bicyclists in positioning themselves correctly when traveling through conflict areas and for drivers having an increased awareness of bicyclists.
In August 2017, the City of Rancho Cucamonga will be installing a green bike lane along Base Line Road and Carnelian Street as a first step in enhancing the bike facility and provide an opportunity to learn more about the technology striping manufacturers have to offer. A future project later this year will further implement the green bike lane continuing along Base Line Road.
Keep an eye out for fellow bicyclists in the Green Zone!
